Seven family members killed by Burmese officials
Jul 10, 2008 - According to an inside source a villager from Hsorapheku, Koson village tract, Phekon Township in southern Shan State arrived at the Karenni army camp in Shadaw Township on July 9th and reported that he is the sole survivor of a massacre of his family by Burmese local officials. more »
Obligatory 100% interest loans cripple families
Jul 10, 2008 - Crippling debts are being forced on families living in the Loilin, Loilin Lay and Hteesakha village tracts by Burmese troops who constrain the villagers to borrow money from the army. Soldiers from LIB no. 530 insist families take out loans which have to be repaid within the year along with an interest charge equal to the amount of the loan. more »
Forced labor on military farms
Jul 7, 2008 - In June 2008, the Loikaw Central Control Command ordered Pruso-based battalions LIB no. 428 and 531 to grow 20 acres of paddy each. According to an inside source, on receipt of this order, the commanders of these battalions forcibly recruited local people from Hteepawso village tract to help clear the land, plough the fields and plant paddy. more »
Forced labour for army’s castor oil fields
Jul 7, 2008 - Villagers from Teelon and Hteesakah villagers are being forced to neglect their own farms to work on the Burmese army’s castor oil plantations. Troops from LIB no 530, which is based in Loilin-Lay, demanded that villagers come and work on the battalion’s own castor oil project. The villagers have been required to report for work since June 27th. more »
Jun 19, 2008 - Major Moe Than Naing, the commander of the SPDC’s Pruso based Light Infantry Battalion no. 428, summoned the village heads of Dohpreh and Lawtaw Tanaw, Doppreh village tract, to his military base on June 13. During the meeting, the Burmese major told the village chiefs that their villages were required to provide his troops with a hundred 180-feet-long bamboo poles and fifty 60-foot long wooden posts to be used to rebuild his army camp. more »
