Burmese troops demand crops
Jan 12, 2009 - Burmese commander Ye Yint Soe of IB no. 72 from Law Dalay army camp has demanded that all the villagers living in Lawpita village tract provide his troops with a basket of maize or sesame. This order came into force at the end of December 08.
For the peasant farmers in that area, rice is their staple crop; they rely solely on cultivating paddy and to comply with this order they need to purchase maize or sesame. The source said that the price of a basket of maize is 1,500 kyat, while sesame is a 10,000 kyat.
The villagers who are required to supply these crops to the Burmese military are from Daw Kahtuu (old & new) Kanni, Lawpita, Maikan, Hsoelajeh, Koemile, Hsemile, Kyauktaung, Daw Talay Ward, Damasekyar Ward, Padaungkone Ward and Parahita Ward, said the source.
