Burmese troops bid to win Hearts & Minds

Jan 12, 2009 - In an unusual move, a Burmese commander has organized a football tournament in Daw Tamadu village tract. According to an inside source there is speculation that the Burmese military have been ordered to soften their tactics to win support from local peoples in preparation for the upcoming 2010 general election.

Locals say that in Daw Tamadu village tract (Demawso Township), Captain Thaw Zin from LIB no. 574 organized a football club’s opening ceremony on January 4 this year.
Apart from male football teams, there are also five women’s teams competing; they are from Daw Phuu Daw Peh, Daw Pyadu, Daw Nyikhu, Daw Tamadu and Daw Sawpyah.

There is a 10,000 kyat entrance fee per team am and the winning team will also be presented with a trophy. Locals say this behaviour is very unusual and conrtrasts with the normal behaviour of Burmese troops in rural areas.
