RCC Building Project starts on Expropriated Farmland
Jan 24, 2009 - It has reported that a new computer institution is to be built on land seized from farmers who have not received any compensation. In 2006 the Burmese led Loikaw regional control command seized 800 acres of farmland in Tamabukhu, west of Hteetama in the Kyitkeh village.
To date none of the farmers who lost their land have received any compensation. "The RCC seized our lands and said it was for a development project. The RCC argued that in order to implement development projects for the majority, the minority must be prepared to make sacrifices. We are not satisfied with this, but we aren't in a position to do anything, so we just keep quiet. We need compensation. Farming was our living and now we have no land many of us are in a very difficult situation," argued one of the farm owners.
In Karenni State, a lot of farm land has been seized by the Burmese military in recent years. The reason given is that it is needed for development projects. This has led to economic hardship and a shortage of food.
