Skin disease endemic in two villages

Jan 21, 2010 - A backpack medic has reported that the incidence of skin diseases in Law Kerkhu and Law Plyaleh of Kay Lyah village tract is mainly infection suckling babies and the elderly.

The medic attributes the endemic nature of these skin infections to the villagers reliance on a nearby lake. Both villages use the muddy water for cooking, washing and bathing, but the lake is also used by animals.

At least 20 villagers from each village are infected with skin diseases. Both villages are located 20 hours walk away from the nearest hospital in Pruso which is the only source of treatment. There is no clinic or medic in the villages and due to the difficulties of transportation, medics from the town only visit the villages once a year bringing with them only a few medicines. They also charge each patient 1,000 kyat for medication and most patients cannot afford this.
