Burmese troops retaliate with looting & beatings
Aug 20, 2009 - Following a gunfight on August 8th between Karenni forces and SPDC's troops from LIB no. 576, during which some Burmese soldiers lost their lives, Burmese troops have reacted by looting two villages.
After the gunfight, villagers from nearby Thiridah and Daw Weiraw, ran away in fear of retaliation by the Burmese troops, carrying with them just a few items they could gather quickly. According to an inside source Burmese soldiers came to the villages the next day and stole food and domestic animals.
"Burmese troops came into our villages and took food and items of personal property and some items were destroyed, including utensils, property, pigs and oxen," said the source.
Since Thiridad's village chief was among those who escaped, the Burmese troops arrested and beat up section leaders Ngah Reh and Ngaw Reh, the source added.
There are forty families in Thiridah and the estimated cost of all the items taken or destroyed is 3 million kyat, according to the source.
According to a recent update of the situation in the area Burmese troops from the Naungmon-based LIB no. 132 have been deployed to patrol along the Karenni-Shan border.
