Burmese private reported killed by ‘friendly fire’

Aug 20, 2009 - An inside source has reported that two Burmese military columns abruptly exchanged gunfire when both columns encountered each other unexpectedly at the entrance to Daw Muleh, Shadaw, on August 14.

The troops were from LIB no. 576, commanded by second commander Zaw Aung and LIB no. 132, led by Zeya Htun and the gunfight lasted about fifteen minutes.

"A local said one private was killed and another was wounded during the gunfight," said the source.

All the villagers managed to escape from the shootout, but they ran without taking anything with them, for fear of arrest by the Burmese troops. Families became scattered and were unable to find each other and everyone spent an uncomfortable night in the jungle without food or shelter as they dared not return home.

To cover the error caused by a miscommunication between the battalions, Burmese troops went into the village and conducted a house to house search during which they removed anything of value they found, including rice and rupee coins. A number of domestic animals were also slaughtered by the troops. Any paddy and rice left was scattered and buried in mud, according to the source, who added that now all the families are destitute and struggling to feed themselves.

Burmese troops from LIB no. 576 proceeded to Daw Tanaw the same day, where they also seized property and forced 30 villagers to go with them as military porters. To date there has not been any word of their whereabouts.
